To be honest, it was difficult breaking this technique up into steps for the tutorial, because it's much more easily done fluidly in one motion (as seen at the beginning and end of the tutorial).  When you understand what's supposed to happen, focus on getting it smooth, because when you do, it's a lot easier.

There are so many different types of binds it's ridiculous.  Just experiment and watch different videos to find out more unique and interesting ways to bind.  It's worth it when you find that one sweet bind that you can't get enough of.

Probably most of you who are visiting the site (or frequenting the site) already know how to bind, but this is more of a preamble to more advanced binds I'm planning on making tutorials for in the future.  I'm not positive yet about when I'm going to be doing more bind tutorials (gotta keep variety), but I'm pretty sure I will be doing them
sometime soon.

Just a word for some of the folks who are new to yo-yoing... It really really helps, when you're starting to work with binds, to bind in a way that the yo-yo is spinning towards the loop.

When I first started working on binds I looked at a lot of vids on youtube and it looked simple enough. Put the yo-yo on the string, make a loop, drop and pull up. But I couldn't get it to work and it was super frustrating! Finally I saw a vid where it was pointed out that the yo-yo was spinning towards the loop. After I saw that I was starting to do them pretty easily. So, there you go. Most binds that I've seen seem to work off of this principal for the most part. Once I got familiar with my yo-yos and the motions I could start getting them to bind while the yo-yo was spinning away from the loop, but spinning towards is the best way to start out.

Just throwing that out there so others don't get frustrated :).

Yeah, that is a very important point; thank you for taking the time to write that up! In the tutorial, I did only cover binds that use that principle, but it's good to have it plainly stated too.

Yup, it's a Speed Freak! Got it at Worlds. Very very nice yoyo, man.

Hi Kyle!

Great tutorials! Waiting for more bind tutorials! I have a Protostar which is quite difficult to bind. It needs to eat a lot of string to make the yoyo return. A normal backspin bind doesn´t do the job in most cases though this can be due to my lack of skill. ^^ But when it works, there´s almost everytime a knot.

The frontstyle bind works though.

Hey Christian! I have a Protostar also, and you definitely can get consistent binds using a regular backspin bind. It just takes quite a bit of practice to make your hands consistently know exactly how much string to give the yoyo, when/if to pinch, and things like that. All binds I'm planning to cover in the future, except maybe one, are even more challenging to get consistent and snag-free, so I would highly recommend sharpening up your skills with this bind.

Hi Kyle!

I recently found out, how to do a (consistent) backspin bind, but it looks definitely different when I do it. I have to keep my hands closer together (vertically) and pull much more with my throwhand to make the yoyo com back.

An easier sydestile bind in my opinion is to let the yoyo hang over the free index finger (or swing) and bring the throw hand clockwise around the yoyo and then pull to the right and up. Don´t know how its called, but it resembles a bit the dave bind you can find on youtube.

Hey man, nice to hear from you again.

As long as it works and you're pleased with the visual effect of the move, it doesn't matter that it might be slightly different than what I do. Great to hear you're getting consistent binds.

Yeah, that was my thought too as you were describing it, Dave Bind. I agree, it is easier to get the yoyo to bind using it, but it also seems to cause snags more easily if you're not used to doing it. Sounds to me like it's working fine for you though, which is also great to hear.

It´s me again!

The response system on my Protostar was totally worn out. I replaced it and now I have to learn again how to bind. ^^

With worn out response the yoyo binded very smooth and came slow to the hand. Now ith the new grip it shoots as soon as the string grabs. Backspin bind is no problem any more and the Dave bind has to be done quite different to prevent knots.

But I´m still waiting for more bind tutorials! Keep up the good work!

Oh glad it's working better now! I mean, even if you have to readjust your technique, at least the binds are probably much tighter and overall more precise. Although, I'm sure that as you continue to use the Protostar, the pads will probably break in a little more and be in the sweet medium point between the slightly-snaggy responsiveness of new pads and slippy unresponsiveness of old pads.

Pretty soon man, keep looking out for those bind vids.

I struggled allot with the art of binding thinking that I just had to get allot of string onto the bearing but there is more to it than that. This is a good video for the most part but this video by Dazzling Dave very effectively shows what actually happens when doing a bind close up on the yoyo. It tought me how to do real binds.
