It actually happens to be more common for people to do this trick using their throwhand thumb to "catch" the string, rather than with their throwhand index, as shown in the video.  I'm not completely sure why I learned it using my index, but you have the liberty to learn it however you like.  Whichever way feels more comfortable, go for it.  Plus, once you are able to do it one way, there's really nothing stopping you from learning it both ways, or any number of other ways that you can think of.

I just learned that that was what a plastic whip was! ive been able to do it (with my thumb) for like three years! ive just always used it for binding when i have my freehand occupied!

Sometimes when I land it, it doesn't end up in a reverse bottom mount like it does for you. Any idea why? Am I looping it over the wrong side or something? I am using my index finger, like you.

What string do you use? I use slick 8 and it doesn't open as easily and is hard to make it land in undermount, any tips?

Hey Amp,

One thing that is very important for this trick (and really, all whips) is string tension. If you're string is tense it won't have enough slack for the yoyo to land in to. I too experience it landing in a reverse bottom mount from time to time. Not really sure why (or how).

When I first tried learning this trick I threw the slack sideways instead of in front of me, this definitely ended up in some pretty unique mounts (all of which quickly resulted in knots).

I don't have slick 8 string but I do have slick 6. I was able to mount it first shot when I tried. I think the key is practice. :)
